Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stress in Brachycephalic Dogs

Heatwaves can be dangerous for all pets — but for brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs, hot weather can become life-threatening very quickly. Understanding the risks, recognising early warning signs, and knowing when to seek help can save your dog’s life.

Why Brachycephalic Dogs Are More at Risk

Flat-faced anatomy restricts airflow

Panting is less effective at cooling

Heat, humidity, stress and excitement worsen breathing

Even short exposure can trigger respiratory distress

Signs of Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke

  • Loud, heavy or laboured breathing
  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Red or pale gums
  • Weakness, collapse, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Anxiety, restlessness or panic
  • Reduced responsiveness

What To Do If You’re Worried

  • Move your dog to a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area
  • Offer small amounts of cool water
  • Avoid ice baths or rapid cooling
  • Contact your vet immediately

Important note:
Do not wait to see if symptoms improve.

What Happens at the Vet

  • Immediate assessment and stabilisation
  • Controlled cooling
  • Oxygen support if breathing is compromised
  • IV fluids and monitoring
  • Blood tests if required
  • Hospitalisation in severe cases

In serious cases, overheating can lead to collapse and
cardiac or respiratory arrest, meaning some pets may require urgent resuscitation, including CPR.

Prevention Is Better Than Emergency Care

  • Loud, heavy or laboured breathing
  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Red or pale gums
  • Weakness, collapse, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Anxiety, restlessness or panic
  • Reduced responsiveness
